Ton Smits Photography & Design

I'm Ton Smits, a professional photographer from The Netherlands. I was born the 17th of November 1982 in Weurt, a small town between two rivers, the Maas and the Waal. Every spare minute was spend near the water to discover everything nature has to offer. Amphibians, reptiles and fish were the animals that attracted me the most. Later on I went almost every year to France with a good friend of mine to search for amphibians and reptiles. The area we always visited is part of the research-area of a Dutch biologist that keeps a database with all the sights of amphibians and reptiles. The data is used to research how these animals are spread through France, but also to learn why these animals are found on that specific place. On these trips, I started with nature photography as a hobby. In the autumn of 2003, I went for two and a half months to Australia. This was for me the first big trip and after that I knew it wasn't my last. Till then I only knew about the existence of exotic animals from the visits to zoo's and reading books about nature. So when I arrived in Australia it took me almost a month to get used to the fact that the animals like parrots, fruit bats, kangaroos, crocodiles and monitors were not escaped from a zoo, but simply lived there in the wild. After this impressive trip, I knew photography and travelling were going to be two big hobbies of mine. I saved money to buy professional photo gear and for my first real photo trip. In May of 2006, I went to Costa Rica, a rather small country in Middle-America, with breathtaking rainforests. The wet and green rainforests belong to my most favorite places on this earth. Seeing monkeys, macaws, bright yellow eyelash vipers, poisonous dart frogs and many more gave me the feeling of being in paradise. In 2007 I traveled for three months through Madagascar. The reason to choose for Madagascar was, because this unique island is home to many species of animals, plants and landscapes that can't be found anywhere else in the world. Especially the numerous reptiles, a lot of species of chameleons, Madagascar day gecko's, frogs and snakes were high on my list to see. And though I knew it was a special place, it turned out to be far more special then I could ever imagine. Incredible landscapes, sometimes changing very fast. And the most impressive rock formations I've ever seen. Called the 'Tsingy'. It's a must to see this unique island at least once in your life. During this trip I finally convinced myself this has to be my job. Photographing the most beautiful places to show the beauty of nature and convince everybody that we have to protect this unique planet. I hope my photographs will make a difference. In 2008, I plan to visit Kenya, South Africa, Thailand and the parts of Madagascar I wasn't able to visit on my last journey. I hope I can inspire you, with my work, to explore this world by yourself or simply bring this beautiful world a little bit closer to you. Ton Smits
